This article covers the major changes and new features along with the patch notes for SWTOR Game Update 7.2 “Showdown on Ruhnuk”, which releases on December 13th, 2022.

Note: This article references a few new 7.2 guides. If you are reading this on Monday Dec 12, please note that these guides are not yet published. They will go live on Tuesday.

SWTOR 7.2 Highlights

This segment will explain all of the major and most interesting new features and changes 7.2 brings, including new story, new planet, new PvP Arena and changes to PvP Seasons system, UI improvements, Life Day, Double XP and Class Balance.

New Planet: Ruhnuk with Daily Area and Datacron

Shae Vizla has finally tracked down the secret hideout of Heta Kol and her Hidden Chain organization. It’s on a brand new planet called Ruhnuk that’s at the edge of Wild Space and concealed by an electrified nebula.

Ruhnuk is a mostly dry and arid world, save for the canyons formed by occasional flooding. Its original inhabitants were not Mandalorians, but rather miners seeking to exploit the planet’s natural resources. Those previous inhabitants have mysteriously abandoned the planet, leaving all their mining equipment behind.

For more information, read the full Guide to the Ruhnuk Daily Area in SWTOR! And there are also two more new guides – How to start and Complete the Relic Hunt Missions on Ruhnuk and How to get the Ruhnuk Datacron. Both will be available when the patch goes live.

Mandalorian Civil War Story

The Mandalorian Civil War story arc will feature a showdown between Heta Kol and Shae Vizla while finally unifying it with the Malgus and Sa’har Kateen storyline.

It’s still unclear what the actual length of the story content will be, but multiple devs referred to it as a chapter in the 7.2 Livestream, so make of that what you will.

Major characters include Shae Vizla, Heta Kol, Twi’lek siblings Sa’har and Ri’kan Kateen, Torian Cadera, Akaavi Spar, Bask Sunn of the Dar’manda, and the Ordo brothers, Jekiah and Rass.

Major PvP Changes

BioWare wants to increase PvP participation, encourage positive play, and ensure PvP is a rewarding activity. In pursuit of these goals, 7.2 is bringing several huge changes to PvP.

In order to encourage positive play and drive participation, the 3 existing PvP queues (unranked, solo ranked, and group ranked) are getting consolidated into 2 new queues, 1 for 8v8 warzones and 1 for 4v4 arenas.

PvP Seasons have been redesigned to function more like the Galactic Seasons system and now apply to all PvP since ranked is unfortunately no longer a thing.

Players can progress through the rewards track by receiving PvP points through earning medals in Warzones and Arenas, completing PvP matches (with significantly more points awarded to the winners), and doing weekly objectives.

In addition, players can earn PvP Seasons tokens to purchase replica versions of old ranked PvP rewards, though it will take more than 1 season to earn the most coveted items.

Finally, BioWare is removing the match limit for F2P players, so even if you aren’t subbed, you’ll still be able to play as much PvP as you want. However, subscribers will be able to progress through the season twice as fast.

You can learn more about how the PvP Seasons System works in SWTOR from the dedicated guide. (to be published on Tuesday).

New 4v4 PvP Arena: Onderon Palacial Ruins

Accompanying the major changes to PvP, we’ll be getting new PvP content in the form of a new 4v4 arena map on Onderon.

Map Revamp and Other UI/UX Improvements

The biggest UI/UX improvement coming with 7.2 is a revamp to the map system including a new, extremely customizable overlay style for the map that gives players a larger version of the map than what is offered by the minimap without all the obtrusive interface elements from the map window.

Since there is an (optional) new minimal version of the minimap where all the buttons and indicators surrounding it are removed, BioWare opted to create a customizable utility bar for all those buttons and did the same for that top bar that toggles the welcome window, shows online status information, and whether you have mail.

To learn more, check out the dedicated SWTOR 7.2 New Map and UI Changes Guide. (coming Tuesday)

7.2 also comes with 3 colorblind modes (Protanopia, Deuteranopia, and Tritanopia). The setting is a dropdown at the bottom in Preferences -> Graphics.

Last, but not least, the Deconstruct window has been expanded to include deletion so you can now more quickly destroy items that can’t be deconstructed or sold to a vendor.

Balance and Gearing Changes

7.2 will contain some balance changes, primarily small buffs for tanks and some mixed adjustments for all Marauders / Sentinel disciplines.

Meanwhile, the iRating for all non-R4 PvE gear (Decurion, Tionese, Columi, Rakata) will have a new ceiling of 336 while Thyrsian (PvP) will have its iRating ceiling raised to 332. Hyde and Zeek will also sell 332 and 336 mods.

The floor for PvE gear will be raised to 324 while the floor for PvP gear will be raised to 322 so that gearing doesn’t take any longer than it does now.

Shortly after Update 7.2 goes live, the Guide to EndGame Gearing in SWTOR will be updated to match the changes. Same goes for the individual in-depth Combat Styles Guides.
