Star Wars The Old Republic is getting its second and final story update for this year! BioWare ends 2020 with a big bang, delivering two story updates into one, bringing new features to the game, revamping some old ones and doing the usual tons of fixes and balancing work on the game. And all of that comes to your PC a day before the behemoth Cyberpunk 2077 is released! So, SWTOR 6.2 “Echoes of Vengeance” should be insanely good, right? Let’s check out what’s actually in this update!

This article does NOT contain any story spoilers beyond what was shown in the officially released teaser trailer and the patch notes for SWTOR 6.2.

Table of contents

SWTOR 6.2 Release Date

SWTOR Game Update 6.2, called “Echoes of Vengeance” releases on December 9th 2020. The patch is BioWare’s biggest one for the year. Not that we had a great year in SWTOR when it comes to new content, anyway.

2020 will be remembered as an year of great struggle for every one of us, no matter where we live, what we work. The same goes for the BioWare developer team that works on SWTOR.

It is weird that BioWare decided to bravely go against the biggest release of this year – CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 Role-Playing Game. So many other major game title releases and updates or expansions to existing games have been rescheduled to make way for the number one contender for the price Game of the Year.

BioWare did not! They are bravely going against Cyberpunk 2077 as Update 6.2 should be ready for download after a brief maintenance on December 9th. The maintenance will last from 14 to 17 GMT.

New Story Update

As I mentioned SWTOR 6.2 will deliver two updates into one patch. The first one is a pure story content update and will continue the events involving Kira and Scourge as we left them way back in February when 6.1 released and delivered the previous story content for the game.

SWTOR 6.2 Story Kira nd ScourgeSWTOR 6.2 Story Kira nd Scourge

“The ship carrying Satele Shan and her students has been found! Join Jedi Knight Kira Carsen and Sith Lord Scourge to uncover the mystery behind this ship and face off against fanatical Servants of the former Sith Emperor to unravel their sinister plot in our new story update – Echoes of Oblivion!”

BioWare also released a short teaser trailer:

This story update was originally planned for early Summer release – around June. Since almost everyone was working from home during that time and all recording studios were closed, BioWare was unable to record the required voice-overs for this update and it was pushed and pushed until in late Summer the devs finally confirmed 6.2 to be targeting a release in the very late Fall, which not turned out to be December 9th.

SWTOR 6.2 Valkorion and Vitiate returnSWTOR 6.2 Valkorion and Vitiate return

A few personal thoughts, if you allow me. BioWare told us several times in the past few years that Vitiate is gone and will not return. When Kira nd Scourge came after Onslaught to tell us about the danger that looms over Vitiate’s legacy and what he may have left behind, I got excited.

But I still find it weird that the teaser trailer is all about Valkorion and Vitiate and we were supposed to be done with them for good. How about you?

New Flashpoint: The Spirit of Vengeance

For a few weeks SWTOR PTS was up with the new flashpoint available for testing. None of the true story elements were ever available, and the Flashpoint was not properly balanced and even finished for the better part of the testing period. That’s all normal for a PTS cycle, though.

The Flashpoint is the second story part that is coming with 6.2. Its narrative takes you in a different direction than the Kira and Scourge story, but it doesn’t mean it wont be fun and interesting!

Here is the synopsis for this Flashpoint:

“Renegade Mandalorians have ambushed one of Shae Vizla’s capital ships – The Spirit of Vengeance II – to rip it apart and steal priceless Mandalorian relics. Fight these renegades to free Shae Vizla’s ship and save its crew and relics.”

Check out the full SWTOR Spirit of Vengeance Flashpoint Guide if you need a little help with the boss mechanics or to find the lore objects, complete the normal achievements and unlock the hidden ones.

I am not surprised at all that BioWare is releasing Mandalorian related content in December. Disney’s own The Mandalorian tv show is under way and its second season is streaming right now with incredibly positive reviews coming after each episode!

SWTOR is doing its best to take as much of an advantage of the success of this show as they can for a second year in a row. Earlier, in late October, BioWare added a new Cartetl Market shipment all inspired by the Mandalorian show with the release of 6.1.4.

From the PTS tests I was able to do I have to admit that I was amazed to see the new hights BioWare dev team managed to reach with the design of the Flashpoint. The crappy old engine of this game still has a few secrets undiscovered, it seems. I am only hoping that this wont come with a high price tag and lag involved (like in the second boss fight in The Blood Hunt Flashpoint).

New feature: Login Rewards

I have not played enough old MMO games to know where BioWare took this feature from, but it sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? Actually… many of you have told me in the past month or so since it came up on PTS that this is a popular Mobile Games tactic. I don’t play mobile games, so I wouldn’t know.

This is a brand new system for SWTOR and it becomes part of the game starting with the launch of Update 6.2. But what exactly does this system do for you and how does it work?

“Our Login Rewards system is a new feature that rewards all players, regardless of their status! The only thing you need to do is log into our game, open the Login Rewards window, and claim your reward. Rewards could include Companion Gifts, Crafting Materials, Dyes, Tech Fragments, and more valuable items!” explains in an official news announcement post.

This system does not require you to log into the game day after day. It is designed to count logins per week, but to get your rewards you do not have to log in every day or in consecutive days.

SWTOR 6.2 Login Rewards System PreviewSWTOR 6.2 Login Rewards System Preview

Rewards are based on three predefined 28 day Reward Calendars, each with their own theme:

  • Strength In Allies – This calendar will focus on your Companions with rewards such as Companion Gifts and more!
  • United Efforts – This calendar will focus on Crew Skills. You can earn rewards such as crafting materials and more.
  • Aggressive Negotiations – Rewards will focus on player vs player content with rewards such as Warzone Stims, Requisition grants, and more.

When all 28 days of the Reward Calendar have been completed, you will automatically jump into another, different, Reward Calendar. That way you can never get the same calendar twice, keeping the rewards fresh!

If you’re a subscriber, you will also be eligible for a subscriber exclusive Weekly Bonus Reward! To earn this Weekly Bonus Reward, you don’t need to do anything other than log into the game any four days during a week.

Those Bonus rewards will focus primarily on time savers with rewards such as Personal Conquest Requisition, Valor Tokens, and more.

A few personal thoughts…

The login rewards are almost as good as trash. There are a few good hits from what I saw on PTS, but the majority of the rewards are just junk that will fill up your inventory and you will not even notice them or care about getting them at all in most cases.

I am certain BioWare will update this model and bring in more valuable items, at least for the most regular players, who log in often. It’s a good idea, I think, but it just doesn’t deliver enough to make someone, who is not logging in often, to start doing so.

Most players will almost always find something to do if they log in. Come on, BioWare, make them log in, don’t just make them… laugh at the rewards you offer them.

New Feature: Emote Window

I am not sure if this counts as a feature or quality of life improvement. The newly designed Emotes Window structures every single emote available in SWTOR and displays them neatly ordered in categories.

While you browse (or search!) through the emotes, you will see how to acquire each one you do not yet own. Emotes come from various sources, but primarily from the Cartel Market. You will be able to purchase them directly through that new window.

The second new feature BioWare is adding to the game with 6.2 seems a bit weird to me. It could be because I never care for emotes or because I don’t actually role-play in the game, but to me this is a completely useless window that I will probably not open more than once or twice just to check how it may have changed since I last saw it on PTS.

I would love to hear your positive thoughts on the new Emotes Window and how you have been dreaming about this feature (but is it a feature, though?) since launch and now you finally get it! I am not happy about the devs wasting their time with this one and I need someone to counter me with a positive reaction!

Life Day and Nine-Year Anniversary

Earlier this month BioWare released the SWTOR In-Game Events December schedule. In it we see two special events listed and those are the above-mentioned Life Day Celebration and Nine-Year Anniversary.

There wont be much new stuff for a veteran player to discover or earn from the Life Day event, but if you haven’t participated in these before, you will most likely have a hell of a fun times throwing snowballs left and right and earning those rewards and achievements for the first time!

SWTOR Life Day EventSWTOR Life Day Event

SWTOR released on December 21st 2011. In a couple of weeks we will celebrate nine years since that moment! How many of you were there for the big launch and the crazy queue lines to log in to the servers and start your journey?

BioWare will celebrate the ninth anniversary of the game with the usual release of the Anniversary Vendor on the Republic and Empire Fleets. There you will be able to pick up the new ship decorations items as well as all previous anniversary rewards if you have missed them.

SWTOR 7th Anniversary RewardsSWTOR 7th Anniversary Rewards

The Dromund Kaas and Coruscant Strongholds will be available for purchase at the terminals for only 9 Credits (that’s nine, yeah) while the event lasts – from December 15th 2020 until January 5th 2021.

The devs teased something big coming for the tenth anniversary, which will be next year – December 2021. There have been multiple hints throughout this year about the game’s longevity and the fact that BioWare has no plans to stop developing content and supporting Star Wars The Old Republic.

There is also no information at all at the moment what the studio is planning for next year. But you know where you will find it as soon as it is announced –!

More Ranked PvP Replica Rewards

BioWare commuted to releasing more Replica PvP Ranked Rewards and 6.2 is yet another date when we welcome two more additions to the Ranked Vendors.

The following Season 5 and Season 7 Replica Rewards can be purchased from Giradda the Hutt as soon as 6.2 launches:

  • The Gladiator Set and Gladiatorial Nexu Mount (season 5)
  • The Giradda’s Acklay Mount (season 7)
